On 20 November, newly elected IFRRO Director Javier Díaz de Olarte (CEDRO) participated in a meeting of the Council of Cerlalc (the Regional Center for the Promotion of Books in Latin America and the Caribbean, an organization set up under the auspices of UNESCO), in Paris.

Ministers and higher authorities of culture of several Latin American countries, together with members of civil society, gathered to discuss current challenges in the field of copyright, such as access to books and reading, the development of local publishing industries and the digital environment.

IFRRO was present as an observer and had the opportunity to convey the need for intellectual property to be at the forefront when governments enact policies concerning books, as a means to promote the creation of content that is both original and linked to the reality of readers and students of each different country.

IFRRO has had a cooperation agreement with Cerlalc since 2009 and highly values the cooperation and commitment shown by Latin American governments in promoting the development of local publishing industries.
