One of IFRRO’s members in Turkey, YAYBIR, has recently launched an anti-piracy campaign.
With the slogan “Don’t buy pirated books, don’t take part in crime”, the campaign aims at raising awareness about piracy and copyright among the general public with a special focus on social media users and those who download books online. The campaign uses the hashtag #thisisnotyou (#senbudeğilsin, in Turkish) on social media platforms such as Twitter and YouTube, along with three additional slogans related to the most common forms of piracy: “Don’t buy pirated books”, “Don’t download pirated books”, and “Don’t buy photocopied books”.
YAYBIR’s campaign provides information about the different types of piracy and violations of copyright, to prevent users from reading pirated books. In addition, the campaign seeks to explain how piracy disregards the hard work of authors, publishers, translators, illustrators, editors (and the book chain as a whole), while also harming Turkey’s cultural heritage and national economy, with other potential dire consequences for the future.
Besides social media platforms, the campaign will also be supported with interviews, the publication of stories on news websites and ads on the radio.
